National Tell a Joke Day – August 16


What would be better than a day filled with laughter? Annually celebrated on August 16, it is National Tell a Joke Day and that’s no joke!

This day will be filled with smiles and much laughter from morning till night as everyone shares their favorite jokes.  The more jokes that you tell, the more fun you will have and so will those around you.

A joke is described as something that is spoken, written or done with humorous intention.  

Jokes can be of many different forms:

  • Single word or gesture
  • One-liner
  • Question – answer
  • Whole short story

A joke has synonyms which include:

  • Gag
  • Prank
  • Quip
  • Jab
  • Jest

* Jokes have been a part of human culture since at least 1900 BC. * 

In moderation, LAUGHTER is healthy, uses the abdominal muscles and releases endorphins (natural “feel good” chemicals) into the brain.

Within our research, we were unable to find the creator or origin of National Tell a Joke Day, an “unofficial” national holiday.

    For National Tell A Joke Day, I have seen this additional information. National Tell a Joke Day (Joe Miller’s Joke Day). Miller was an 18th century English actor that was famous for his one liners (jests). The 16th of August is considered his birthday.
