National Shamu the Whale Day – September 26

September 26 annually celebrates National Shamu the Whale Day.

Shamu is the name that is used for several of the SeaWorld orca shows and it is the stage name that is given to the “star” of those shows, beginning with the original Shamu in the late 1960′s.   Shamu died in 1971, however the name Shamu was trademarked by SeaWorld and has been given to different orcas at different times when performing in Shamu shows in different SeaWorld parks.

* Female orcas can live to 90 years.  Male orcas can live to 60 years.
* On average, a killer whale eats 500 pounds a day.
* Killer whales imitate others, and seem to deliberately teach skills to their kin

Look up videos of Shamu, or, if you are near a SeaWorld, see the famous whale in person. Post on social media using #ShamuTheWhaleDay to encourage others to do so as well.

The origin of National Shamu The Whale Day, an “unofficial” national holiday, stems from the first surviving baby Shamu, born in captivity, was born on September 26, 1985.   That is how the date to celebrate was chosen, however, our research was unable to find the creator of National Shamu the Whale Day.

I will NEVER “Celebrate” a day that supports the capture and caging of animals that should live in it’s natural habitat, THE OCEAN!! Shame on Sea World!

We should be “celebrating” this day by boycotting every aquarium that keeps these highly social and intelligent creatures in captivity. It’s the LEAST Shamu would expect from us!!! 😦

Please do not support this cruelty! Every time you pay money to SeaWorld, you’re supporting these majestic animals living their lives in fish tanks.

If you must go, make the time to wait at the glass to look one in the eye. Once you see those thoughtful eyes looking back at you, I guarantee you’ll think twice the next time!! 😦

The average female killer whale at SeaWorld only lives about 13 years. The lifespan of a wild female orca is over 90 YEARS!! There are a few whales who have lived into their 40’s in captivity, but they are very rare!

Wild orca travel up to 100 miles in a day. How many miles long is a SeaWorld aquarium???

      This is just tragic.

As a child, I thought the whales were one of the coolest things in the park. As an adult, I can’t wait to see the day where keeping these gorgeous, highly intelligent beings in glass fishbowls is illegal.
