NATIONAL LOLLIPOP DAY

July 20th, National Lollipop Day, is an annual observation of this popular and flavorful treat.

Lollipops come in many colors, flavors and shapesThey range from the small size, which can be purchased by the bag full and are also given away at banks, barber shops and parades, to the very large ones that are made out of candy canes twisted into circles.

The history of the first lollipops in America is unclear.  Some speculate that they were invented during the American Civil War (1861-1865) while others believe lollipops have been around since the early 1800′s.  Most often, it is George Smith who gets the credit for inventing the modern style lollipop in 1908 and he trademarked the lollipop name in 1931.  His idea of putting candy on a stick was to make it easier to eat.  The name came from a popular racing horse at the time, Lolly Pops.

NATIONAL GET OUT OF THE DOG HOUSE DAY

National Get Out The Dog House Day is observed annually on the third Monday In July.  Generally, when you are “In the dog house”, you have fallen in disfavor with someone, generally your spouse or significant other.  However, you can also be “in the dog house” with a friend or even with you boss at work.  On National Get Out Of The Dog House Day, turn that disappointment that someone has with you and get out of the dog house.

Here are some tips to get “out of the dog house”.

Put down the technology.  If this is something you can apologize for, don’t use email, texting or other technology.  Do the apology face-to-face.

Meet at a favorite coffee-house.  The purpose here is to start talking.  Listen to what the other person has to say and do not be judgmental or defensive.  Found out why you are “in the doghouse” and give suggestions on how to you can improve or fix the issue.

Send flowers, chocolates or an appropriate gift.  Include a hand-written note about how you are committed to fixing the issue.  Do this AFTER you have already spoken.  You will win extra brownie points as this will be unexpected.
